Hawke's Bay win, Chandler goes

by David Gearey at Park Island
asbpremiership.co.nz

NAPIER - Hawke's Bay notched a surprise 3-0 win over Canterbury United Dragons at Napier today - but it was the news that head coach Matt Chandler had resigned that shook Park Island.

Chandler - who took Hawke's Bay to within a whisker of an historic first playoff last season - announced his decision to take up an overseas appointment instead.

The club had endured a mixed start to the season with a 3-0 defeat at Waitakere and a disappointing 2-2 draw with YoungHeart Manawatu.

Chandler's decision to resign will come into effect at the end of November when he and his family relocate to Brisbane.

It is likely that Chanlder's assistants, Chris McIvor and former All White Jonathan Taylor, will step into the vacant post, with both viewed as a safe pair of hands and both with suitable local football knowledge and experience.

That development aside, Hawke’s Bay started this match more productive with players from both sides not shying away from any physical encounters.

But it took until the end of the first half for the 400 strong crowd to have anything to cheer about.

Hamish Watson notched up his second goal of the season when he pounced on a Canterbury defensive error to calmly slot past Adam Highfield in the opposition goal.

Fourth official Matt Conger immediately held up the two minutes of additional time and Bay captain Bill Robertson doubled the home side's advantage when he rose highest to head a Hawke’s Bay corner in from just six yards.

Both sides exchanged chances and had it not had been for the impressive Shaun Peta in the Hawke’s Bay goal then Canterbury would have continued their goal scoring run which had previously seen them score 9 goals in their last two fixtures.

Hawke’s Bay wrapped the match up on 62 minutes when youngster Sam Margetts bore down on goal, slipped past Highfield, and neatly drove the ball into the back of the net for the Bay’s third of the day.

Matt Chandler was impressed with his side after a disappointing draw the previous week.

Chandler said: “We were class today and it’s probably one of the best performances I’ve seen out there(Park Island) in a long time”

“We showed character and resilience and I’m very impressed how we responded after last weekend,”  he added.

Canterbury’s coach Keith Braithwaite was disappointed with the result but heaped praise on the young Hawke’s Bay side.

“We can only play as well as your opposition let you and today Hawke’s Bay wanted it more than us” he said.

So both sides have a week off with the OFC Champions League scheduled for next weekend.

For Hawke’s Bay, the search to fill the void left by Matt Chandler begins.
