Five of the best farewell for Auckland

by Bob Pearce at Kiwitea Street

AUCKLAND - Auckland City gave themselves a great launching pad for the FIFA Club World Cup with a 5-0 victory over YoungHeart Manawatu in an ASB Premiership game at Kiwitea St yesterday.

The Aucklanders leave on Monday for Japan where they have a warm-up game against a university side on December 2 before taking on the J-League champions in a qualifying match for the Club World Cup.

They wouldn’t have been human if they hadn’t had the big trip on their minds but they rarely lost control against a Manawatu side without injured striker Seule Soromon.
It took only seven minutes for them to take the lead when Danko Koprivcic took advantage of a poor clearance from a corner. There was more than a hint of offside but the goal stood.
Luis Corrales, clearly with an eye on the selectors, was harrying the defence on the right wing and squandered one golden chance before scoring possibly Auckland’s best goal of the season in the 22nd minute.
He received a nicely turned pass from David Mulligan and taking the ball on the volley at hip height fired it powerfully into the net from 15 metres. For a while it looked like an Auckland goal feast but Manawatu never lost their shape.
In the 32nd minute Joachim Rande replaced Pablo Moya and a couple of minutes later he should have reduced the deficit.  Josh Chettleburgh made ground on the right and delivered a perfect cross only for Rande to head over the top from close range.
In the 44th minute Rande fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area and drew a diving save from Jacob Spoonley in the Auckland goal.
Auckland were rarely in trouble in the second spell as they moved the ball around and maintained possession, setting up a number of chances—and the goals came.
In the 54th minute Corrales was felled by Cory Chettleburgh and Mulligan stroked in the resulting penalty. Corrales was involved again in the fourth goal chesting the ball down for substitute Emiliano Tade to score.

The fifth and final goal was a debut effort for young Stephen Carmichael who had come on as a substitute and was left with only a tap-in after good work by Ian Hogg.
There was plenty to admire in the Auckland effort but one player to take the eye was Spaniard Andreu Guerao, who has played only spasmodically as he has built up fitness after a late start to the season.
He played the role of a holding midfielder and showed many of the class touches that have allowed him to carve out a professional career around the world after starting in Barcelona. He is the kind of player who should prosper in Japan.
Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx was pleased with the way his players focussed on the game in hand with out being deistracted by their upcoming trip.
“I thought we played really well,” he said. “We had lots of possession and created plenty of chances. We emphasised during the week that it was important to retain your focus for every game.”
Manawatu coach Stu Jacobs was pleased his team kept on trying and never gave in despite falling behind.
“Unless you’re prepared to work hard you’ll get nothing,” he said.

“We created a couple of chances, particularly Joachim’s header but at this level you’ve got to take the gilt-edged ones.”
