Champions at a canter as Pearce breaks scoring record

by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park

WHENUAPAI - Waitakere United began the defence of their ASB Premiership with a 3-0 defeat of Team Wellington at Fred Taylor Park.
The margin was the same as their 4-1 in the Grand Final but what a difference six months have made.

Team Wellington had only Luke Rowe of their Grand Final starters on the field for the 2012 season kickoff. Waitakere had seven of their finalists back again.
And one of them, Roy the Rocket Krishna, showed that on the eve of Guy Fawkes Day he retains his explosive touch.

Just 28 seconds into the game he pilfered a Wellington pass, shook off two attempted tackles and fired a bouncing drive past Scott Basalaj in the visitors’ goal.
Considering that disastrous start, Wellington’s youngsters did well to be only 1-0 down at the break as Waitakere dominated 70 per cent of possession but couldn’t make the most of their chances.

After 33 minutes they had earned seven corners to nil but with no profit from them.
The second goal came in the 65th minute when Krishna was brought down in the area and David Mulligan, Waitakere’s signing from Auckland City, converted the spot kick with aplomb.

The final goal was in many ways the best as some slick inter-passing set up the chance for Allan Pearce in the 78th minute.

Pearce's strike makes him the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the ASB Premiership with 63 goals in 121 career appearances with Waitakere United.

30-year-old Pearce shared the record with former Waitakere and Auckland frontman Keryn Jordan over the off season.
It was hard to miss fullback Daniel Morgan with his extravagant hair style and he lived up to his prominence with a series of penetrating runs from the back that should have brought more reward.
Danny Robinson in the Waitakere goal had a largely untroubled afternoon with Wellington’s best chance coming in the 33rd minute when a risky back-pass by Matt Cunneen left the goalkeeper to make a brave block on Karston Viborg.
Waitakere showed clearly that their pre-season 2-1 victory over Auckland City last weekend in the Charity Cup was no flash in the pan and they will be hard to deprive of their ASB Premiership title.

Coach Paul Marshall is promising more to come as he polishes the potential of his new squad.
“We will improve dramatically,” he said. “The team isn’t gelling yet and there’s a lot more to come. That’s the exciting thing for me.”
That said, he was disappointed by the score at halftime considering the huge advantage they had in possession.
“We should have scored four or five,” he claimed.

Wellington coach Matt  Calcott, in contrast, was pleased his young side had fought back from their horror start. He fielded seven Phoenix Academy players, most with no ASB Premiership experience.
“We knew the first 20 minutes were key and then we conceded a goal within a minute. I was pleased the way we got back into the game,” he said.
“These youngsters are going to grow as footballers and we’ve got some experienced players to come in. We haven’t had much time together. This is only our second game.
“You'll see.  We’ll improve like last year. We’ve got it all in front of us and we’ll be a different side when we come up here again," he said.
