Mulligan penalty undoes plucky Waikato FC

by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park

WHENUAPAI -   Waitakere United missed a hatful of chances but still beat Waikato FC 1-0 after a controversial penalty decision in the second half.
The deciding moment came in the 65th minute when Waikato struggled to clear a right-wing corner.

The ball hit Rory Turner’s hand and the referee, Isaac Trevis, pointed to the penalty spot as the voluble Waikato coach, Declan Edge, indicated his disbelief.
David Mulligan expertly rammed home the spot kick and there was no further scoring. The champions were off the hook after a day when they contrived to miss chance after chance against the visitors.
In fact, Waikato came closest to scoring a goal from open play. In the 32nd minute they broke quickly from defence, a long pass found Ryan Thomas and from 40 metres out he launched a perfect lob that sailed over the head of goalie Danny Robinson, who was a spectator well out from his goal.
It was odds on for the opening goal. But as home fans held their breath, the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and stayed out.

A monumental let-off in a game where Robinson barely warmed his hands while at the other end Matt Upton was a dominant figure in his area and added to Waitakere’s frustrations.
On a bumpy surface – nowhere near as good as last week’s – there were more giveaways than takeaways by both sides, who tried to play possession football but were frustrated by the surface, their own lack of precision and some tenacious defending.
Waitakere lost defender Matt Cunneen with a cut head, but his replacement Tim Myers could well have cemented a starting spot for next week.
Up front Roy Krishna was a danger but one muted by his tendency to squander chances that came his way – a tribute perhaps to the pressure applied by Waikato with veteran Hone Fowler to the fore.
Edge, who wears his heart on his sleeve in all things Waikato and football, received a ref’s warning for his sideline comments and was still seething about the penalty decision after the game.
“Twice we’ve worked hard and been mistreated by the officials,” he said. “I thought we played well today against a very good team. Their team is expensive. My team is free.
“We played a bit more aggressively this week and used some penetrative passes. But the pitch wasn’t good enough.”
Waitakere coach Paul Marshall singled out finishing as a big issue for his team after so many chances went begging.
“If you added up the chances, it was 15-5 to us. To be fair they were unlucky but we should have scored more.
“The penalty was hard for the ref and a nightmare for them.”
Marshall says his team is working on the transition from defence into attack, which is putting pressure on Ryan De Vries and Allan Pearce as they struggle to be available at both ends. Perhaps this explains the lack of finish.
But the champions can count themselves lucky that they emerged from this game with three points despite squandering so many chances.
